Date Night Activities Near Fort Benning That Aren't Dinner & a Movie

At a TRADOC installation like Fort Benning, our schedules can often be erratic and exhausting. That makes it all the more important that we take a break from the Privates, LTs, Drill Sergeants or kids (if you happened to spawn any) and just get away for the night with our loved ones. So whether this is your weekly routine, which I recommend, or your monthly (or God forbid your annual), we're here to make sure you enjoy yourself with something unforgettable! Check out these options to spice up the standard "dinner and a movie" fall-back!

A Night at the Opera

Want an awesome date night experience where you don't even have to talk to your date (the agony!)? Let the theater do it for you! Columbus is home to Springer Opera House, the State Theater of Georgia, which has been in operation for over 140 years. Enjoy the beautiful historic space and a show with your date either before or after dinner. Not only is it a fun way to spend the evening, but it's actually one of the few places in town that you can dress up for and not feel out of place.

Right and Up Tip: Follow Springer Opera House on Facebook and Instagram to get the latest info on shows coming to the theater.

Wine & Painting

For a fun and flirty evening, you should definitely consider Brushes & Beverages in Uptown Columbus for your next date night. Make a reservation by emailing or calling Katy, the owner, and she'll have your stations set up when you arrive. Choose your canvas size and either paint whatever you like or pick something from the hundred or so examples lining the walls. Their art assistants will even trace the outline of your painting for you so you're sure to walk away with a masterpiece. The assistants, most of whom are Art majors at Columbus State, and Katy will walk around to assist you in both technique and color scheme. Order wine by the glass or bottle, or bring your own!

Right and Up Tip: Definitely go to dinner before this activity. If you're anything like me, you won't leave well enough alone with your painting. I got there at 6 pm and didn't leave til almost 10 pm because I had to make sure my painting looked better than my husband's, which it did (duh). It was so fun that we actually forgot to eat dinner.

Comedy and Live Music

The Loft in Uptown Columbus has regular comedy and live music acts in its upstairs space. You can grab a bite to eat before enjoying the entertainment. Additionally, the Suite Bar & Grill and Ben's Chophouse also have live music scheduled throughout the week.

Escape Room

Having moved here from Fort Riley where there was an awesome local escape room, I assumed I wouldn't be so lucky as to have one of these in my next military town. But, as rare as it is, I was wrong. If you're unfamiliar with this term, an escape room is, well...a room that you're locked into. You have to find clues and solve puzzles that help you break out of said room. It's really, really fun! Luckily, Columbus is home to Escape This Live. You can book your experience online with your date or a whole group.

Right and Up Tip: You can book private rooms or open rooms, which just means that you'll be partnered with other couples or groups in the same room to solve the puzzles together. I know, interacting with new people sounds terrifying, but it's actually fun. Plus if you don't escape in the time limit, you can always blame it on them instead of your dumb self.

Catch a Game

Columbus is home to several sports teams including the Columbus Cottonmouths hockey team, Columbus Lions football team and Muscogee Roller Girls roller derby team. Columbus loves its contact sports! Bringing your date to any of these games is a creative and exciting alternative to dinner and a movie.

As with all good date nights, it's good to put a little substance in your stomach at some point. Check out our list of great eats in the area by clicking here!
